Restaurant Flatware is a Bigger Decission Than You Think
Deciding on restaurant flatware seems like an easy decision, but making the right choice for you operation can save you plenty of money. As far as flatware goes it is not the biggest initial outlay of cash, but the constant replacement can certainly add to your restaurants expense. We all know, regardless of what preventative measures we take, the flatware ends up being thrown out, stolen, or bundled up in the restaurant linen and thrown in the bin. Replacement is endless so don’t get caught in the replacement trap.
One of the biggest factors you need to look at after deciding on a specific pattern is making sure that the pattern will not be discontinued. Nothing is worse than realizing you need to stock up again only to find that you’ll have to replace the entire stock.
Flatware is either stamped or forged. Most restaurant flatware is constructed of a stainless-steel alloy containing chrome and nickel. The percentage of these metals gives the flatware their durability, strength, and corrosion resistant properties. We suggest that you look for 18/8 or 18/10 flatware (containing 18% chrome and 8% nickel or 18% chrome and 10% nickel). These mixes give the strength that will hold up under normal restaurant usage and still adds enough nickel to resist corrosion. Buying a cheaper restaurant flatware will cost more in the long run in most situations.
